Living Lab initiated in Catalonia
During the ITS World Congress last month, a consortium from the Spanish autonomous region of Catalonia announced the initiation of a Living Lab for automated driving. CARTRE project partner APPLUS+ IDIADA is one of the leaders of this consortium, which unites Spanish OEMs as well as suppliers and public authorities. The Catalonia Living Lab provides a comprehensive and legally assured testing area for autonomous driving, including urban, rural and inter-city routes. The Living Lab includes a one-stop-shop for the registration of automated test vehicles and over 6000km of digitised roads for the validation of results.
Catalonia is one of the main vehicle manufacturing regions in Europe. It produces almost 600.000 vehicles a year and counts around 600 suppliers. To support its mobility policy on self-driving vehicles and connectivity, the Government of Catalonia encouraged the creation of the Connected and Automated Driving Forum of Catalonia as early as 2015. Its goals is to define and deploy strategic initiatives that foster related technologies, talent and business attraction. This forum groups the main agents committed with the development of the industry of connected and automated vehicle in Catalonia.
