Connectivity and automation: latest development, future challenges

On Wednesday, 21.06, ERTICO organised an event on the latest developments and future challenges of connected automation. The Special Interest Session took place during the 12th ITS European Congress in Strasbourg, which brought together over 2800 stakeholders in intelligent transportation systems. The speakers at the event presented the he role of ICT and alternative architectures in automation and connectivity. Additional topics such as hybrid communications, cellular and ad hoc networks, mobile edge computing, cyber security and data privacy were also tackled during the presentations and the related discussion. The session gathered key players from industry and academia in the field of connected automated road transport, who presented the current status and latest developments.

Volker Fricke (Germany) of IBM zoomed in on the Internet of Mobilty. Luc Jansseune (Belgium) of ERTICO presented the European Automotive and Telecom Alliance. Guillame Trehard (Belgium) of AKKA analysed how ICT can support industrialisation of autonomous cars. Francisco Sanchez Pons (Spain) of CTAG provided an overview of different test beds in Europe at the moment. Dr Eckhart Steiger (Germany) of Bosch presented several technology enablers for automated driving.

Automation and connectivity in road transport is one of the top ranked research topics worldwide. The role of ICT and the use of advanced technologies is increasingly important and it is anticipated to play a key role in the near future to boost the deployment of connected and automated road transport. With the theme “ITS Beyond Borders” the 12th ITS European Congress developed its programme around seven main topics including mobility services, ITS for freight and logistics, ITS and the environment, network operation, satellite technology applied to mobility and certainly connected and automated transport. As one of the few European cities providing an environment where cross-border issues and challenges such as technology compatibility and interoperability or legislation evolution and application, Strasbourg sees itself as a living lab for mobility.
